chana masala

This is an easy and wonderful dish that is a popular Punjabi dish in Pakistani and Indian cuisine. Along with chickpeas, the ingredients typically include onion, chopped tomatoes, coriander seed, garlic, chillies, ginger, and garam masala. For our family this is a quick anytime meal that goes well with rice, roti or poori.

sautéed chana masala

Yield: 4 servings


1tbsp. Oil
1 tsp. mustard seeds
1 tsp. cumin seeds
3 pieces of dried red chilli
1 medium onion diced
1 lb 13oz. can chickpeas
1 tsp. turmeric powder
1 tsp. curry powder
1 tsp. coriander powder
Cilantro chopped for garnish
salt to taste


• Heat the oil in a pot or kadai.
• Splutter mustard seeds
• Add the cumin to quickly brown (15 secs)
• Add red chilli peppers and onions and sauté until slightly softened and translucent
• Add the turmeric, curry, and coriander powders and blend with the onion mixture for 30 seconds (Do not burn the spice mixture)
• Add the chickpeas and stir well with the onion and spice mixture
• Salt to taste
• Sauté for 10 minutes and garnish chana with cilantro. Serve with hot pooris, chapatis, bread or steamed rice
